Next Generation 911 Services: Integrating Wireless and Digital Communications


The success of the Next Generation 911 service (NG 911) projects will depend on the effective integration of wireless and digital communications into a NG911 emergency communication system, according to Government Computer News (GCN).
Integration is important to offer text and video services to NG911 users. Currently, the 911 system is based on wireline platform and does not allow text or other data services.
In order to ensure that the planned integration is effective, the Federal Communications Commission has recently, at the closing of 2010 and beginning of 2011, sought ideas from the industry. The FCC (News - Alert) is primarily investigating how to integrate cellular and digital communications into a Next Generation 911 services emergency communications system that would be able to handle video and data, as well as voice.
According to the FCC National Broadband Plan officials, the government is encouraging innovation in the development and deployment of NG 911 networks and emergency alert systems. The commission is currently compiling information from the public on implementing NG 911 services and moving public safety communications beyond traditional voice-centric technologies.
The commission has acknowledged that the telecom industry’s technological innovation including the advanced IP-based devices and applications have enhanced the ability of the consumer to communicate, sending and receiving information.
At the same time, the legacy circuit-switched 911 services system is unable to accommodate the capabilities embedded in many of these advanced technologies, such as the ability to transmit and receive photos, text messages and video, according to FCC.
Texting and sharing photographs and video could be the best way to alert first responders in case of emergency. For instance, in New Zealand, which was devastated by the recent earthquake, one woman sent more than 10 text messages to her family members while she was lying in the rubble. A caller might also prefer texting in situations when there’s a threat of being identified while speaking.
According to Julius Genachowski (News - Alert), chairman of the FCC, shootings at the Virginia Tech Campus is an example of the need for NG911 services. Some students and witnesses tried to text 9-1-1 during that emergency, but those messages never went through; they were never received by local 9-1-1 dispatchers.
The NG911 is gaining momentum. TeleCommunicaiton Systems, a provider of secure-mobile communication technology, announced plans to offer support for the recent introduction of the Next Generation 9-1-1 Preservation Act of 2010.source

3G, broadband wireless access key growth OBJECTS : Economic Survey

India's Economic Survey for 2010-11 Friday termed the introduction of third generation (3G) and broadband wireless access (BWA) technologies as the "key frontiers" of the growth of the telecom industry. 

"The last five years have been transformational for Indian telecom industry, the next few years look even more exciting. One of the key new frontiers is 3G technology," said the annual report tabled by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the Lok Sabha Friday. 

"The auction of 3G and BWA spectrum has been successfully conducted. This will encourage further expansion of wireless services," it added. 

Considering the growth of wireless telecom, the survey also said there are excellent opportunities for domestic and foreign investors in the manufacturing sector as well.

At present, most wireless core equipment is imported and there is great potential to manufacture these items in the country. 

The production of telecom equipments in value terms increased from Rs.48,800 crore during 2008-09 to Rs.51,000 crore during 2009-10. 

The worth of telecom equipment, including customer premises equipment produced during 2010-11, is expected to be about Rs.53,500 crore. 

Exports of telecom equipment have also increased from Rs.11,000 crore in 2008-09 to Rs.13,500 crore during 2009-10 and are expected to increase to Rs.14,000 crore in 2010-11. 

The survey also said there are still about 62,443 uncovered villages which would also be provided with village public telephone facility with subsidy support from universal service obligation fund. 

The survey stated that the sector has not only led to rapid growth but also helped a great deal towards maximisation of consumer benefits as tariff have been falling across the board. 

The average tariff has come down from almost Rs.17 per minute in 1999 to about Rs.3 per minute in 2004 and, by March 2010, this became as low as 57 paise per minute while today it has reached a level of 30 paise per minute. 

The total telephone subscribers base rose to 764.77 million at the end of November 2010 as against 76.54 million in 2004. 

While the wireless telephone connections contributed to growth as their numbers rose from 35.62 million in March 2004 to 729.58 million at the end of November 2010. The wireline has shown a decline from 40.92 million in 2004 to 35.19 million in November 2010.

Google Nexus S with AT&T 3G Appears at FCC


Google is one of the world’s leading software manufacturers both in terms of online applications and mobile software. Quite obviously, their Androidmobile platform can largely be attributed when it comes to their success as it has become one of the most used platforms in the world. However, Google has also dabbled in in the hardware world working closely with manufactures like HTC and Samsung to push out the Nexus One and Nexus S, respectively.
However, both the Nexus One and Nexus S currently only work with T-Mobile’s 3G speeds leaving those wanting to use it on AT&T with slow speeds. Luckily, a version of the Nexus S was just spotted at the FCC complete with AT&T 3G built-in. Unfortunately, this device has yet to be confirmed but seeing how the Nexus S is one of the most highly sought after Android devices currently on the market it most likely won’t be too long now.source

A Mobile service that saves voicemail and recordings to the cloud


Irish company RecordMyCall.ie has developed a new service that allows the user to record all important phone calls and save all valuable voicemail messages to the internet cloud.
The service requires no purchase or installation of equipment and works from mobiles and landlines. The cloud-based offering works by dialling just one number.
RecordMyCall.ie also allows you to record a meeting or dictate notes and as such this service will prove hugely beneficial for solicitors, doctors, accountants and journalists, amongst other professional users.
Recordings can be immediately emailed for dictation and backup, eliminating the need to return to the office with a dictaphone.
Adventurer Pat Falvey has also started using RecordMyCall.ie to record his daily reports as he treks across the ice and snow to the North Pole - he wanted a solution that took his call recording at any time and had the ability to email the MP3 file to his website.

Voicemail has become a critical part of people’s lives

With more than 5m mobile phones in use in Ireland, voicemail has become a critical part of people’s personal and business lives.
The voicemail service is operational across O2, Vodafone, Meteor, 3 and Tesco Mobile.
Users register using a mobile phone by calling 01 52 42 171. RecordMyCall sends you a welcome text – you reply with your email address and all recordings are automatically sent to this email address (recordings are in a standard MP3 format).
Recordings are securely encrypted, and users must comply with the Irish Data Regulator.
The cost of using the service ranges from 1 cent per minute to record a meeting or dictate notes, to 10 cents a minute to record a landline call, to 25 cents a minute to record a valuable voicemail message.
“We believe Recordmycall.ie will prove an invaluable service in people’s lives and we are currently offering a free trial,” Paul McCarthy of RecordMyCall.ie said.
“For now, you can use this service to call any landline or mobile numbers, 0818 and 1850 numbers.
